We crossed back to mainland Chile, leaving Tierra Del Fuego using the longer Porvenir to Punta Arena route. The Straights are about 50kms wide here and the chance of spotting whales were high. We saw plenty of dolphins and birds but sadly no whales. After the 10 hours ride it was good to get a chance for a little rest.
The first sight of Punta Arenas gives a hint of its important shipping past. Rows and rows of dry docks line the coast. Many of them still clearly in use and very busy. Not all ships managed to make it to the slipway for a lick of new paint though as there was also a line of decaying boats littering the shoreline too.
Hi Mike, Hi Liddy. Sounds like a manic journey for the ferry, unbelieveable scenery though, have fun on the mini-cruise. Dan
